History of the Park

On February 28 2005, the Chocolate Bayou Recreation Clulb donated their Monsanto Park facility to the Alvin Rotary Park Foundation, Inc. The park, located at 6808 CR 172, was originally built by Monsanto Chemical Company for use by their employees and families. The Chocolate Bayou Rec Club was formed in early 1963 by employees of Monsanto and purchased the facility later that year. The beautiful 12 acre park on the banks of Chocolate Bayou has many fabulous amenities. The meeting hall, Monderosa Hall built in 1967, has over 6,600 square feet of air conditioned space featuring a 20' rock fireplace as a focal point. It also has serving, kitchen and restroom facilities. The covered barbeque pavilion features several huge pits that can be used to cook hundreds of pounds of meat at one time, as well as a serving area and clean up section. There is a basketball/tennis court, sand volleyball court and a wooded playground area with outdoor restroom facilities. The fenced pool has a locker room for storage as well as restrooms and showers. Adjacent to the 12 acre fenced park is a 26 acre tract for parking that features a baseball/softball field.

The Alvin Rotary Foundation has renamed the park Alvin Rotary Park and will oversee the day to day operations with volunteers from the Alvin Rotary Club. Several local businesses have stepped up to help the group with updating and maintaining the facility. Paul Rhodes of O'Day Drilling in Pearland has offered to service and maintain the water system. Karlis Ercums III of K3-BMI will help out with the maintenance of the septic system and pool. Skipper Rush of Rush Maintenance will keep the landscaping in great shape. More sponsorships are being solicited so if your interested, please call the Rotary Foundation at (281)331-4200.

The main goal of the Alvin Rotary Club in taking on this major project is to provide a beautiful, safe environment for local non-profit youth and adult groups to use at minimal costs. By renting out the facility throughout the year, the Alvin Rotary Club hopes to pay for maintenance and upkeep of the park so that the less fortunate can use this facility whenever needed. By making this generous gift work, the Rotary Club is making a tremendous contribution to the community by providing use of this park and making Alvin a better place to live.
